During the Christmas holidays we had the great opportunity to spend 2 days out with our kid enjoying fresh snow in Pian del Cansiglio, Veneto. Out little explorer absolutely loved it! Most people associate mountains + snow = skying. Let’s check some activities to have fun in the snow with babies, toddlers and kids without skiing.
We are very lucky because the mountains are only 30 minutes drive from Vittorio Veneto, where my boyfriend’s family lives, and we can just decide to go there to spend the sunniest and warmest hours outside and come back home to have lunch and the afternoon nap.
We try to opt outside in winter time on a daily basis, but the weather was rainy and greyish during last holidays: We were looking forward that much to a sunny day to go to Pian del Cansiglio and play in the snow.
This upland is about 1000 m high surrounded by the mountains and it is a perfect place to enjoy nature and outdoor activities in all seasons: a fresh oasis in the summer, a starting point for hiking to see foliage or spring flowers, a great location to go sledding.
After arriving in Pian del Cansiglio, we parked the car, dressed the little explorer with his snowsuit, purchased our sled (we now have one for this and future snow seasons) and headed to the slope. And started going down the hills and up again for hundreds times. It was really funny for all the family.
When our little one was too tired for sledding we started a snow balls battle and tried to build a snow man. Another great tip is just to relax on the cafe sunny terrace drinking a hot chocolate.
In Pian del Cansiglio there are also sky slopes for beginners and cross country skiing tracks. But my outdoor activity dream is to go hiking with snowshoes in the forest: let’s see when this dream will come true.
You can find below some practical information to organize a day out in the snow in Pian del Cansiglio. It’s really a great place for a family winter day trip. And it’s only 1.5 hour drive from Venice, but far less crowded and expensive than Cortina d’Ampezzo.
When you reach the upland, you will have a great view all over the mountains. You can either park on the left, where there is a very easy sky slope with a gear rental shop, or drive further to Rifugio Sant’Osvaldo and turn right direction Golf Club.
In both places you can enjoy a stunning view, tasty local cuisine at a very reasonable price and experience great mountain atmosphere. At Le Rotte you may be lucky to find a place next to the old fireplace.
Snow Gear – Rental Info
There are two snow gear rental spots next to the parking places mentioned above. Prices are almost 100% the same, in the first shop on the left the choice is a bit wider. Wooden sled are for rental, plastic ones are only for sale (these are the best ones for kids). If you are planning to spend more days on the snow, consider to buy a plastic sled (+ snowsuit) at Decathlon or online.
